Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting is trending these day. It serves dual purpose, offering light in a much needed area, and changing the design look of the space. Pendant lights come in all sort of colors, finishes, styles, and lengths.

As an Interior Decorator, I often get asked these two questions; how many will I need? And how big should they be? Good questions!! As with anything in design, there are guidelines.

How big requires a little bit of math:
Generally speaking you want 12"-16" from the end of the island. Most common is 12". Lets say you have a kitchen island that is 120" and you want 4 lights. With 4 pendants, you will have 5 open spaces, one on each end, and 3 in the middle (one between each pendant). Using 12" x 5 (open spaces) = 60".  Subtract that from 120" and you are left with 60". Divide 60" by the number of pendants (4 pendants) and you are left with 15". This will be the diameter for you fixture. Can you figure out what the diameter would be if you were using 3 pendants? (Hint 24")

How many?
The Rule of 3. In the design world, odd numbers seem to work the best. That being said, rules are made to be broken. In the example I gave above, I use 4 pendants. Why? Because the island is very long, and can handle 4 pendants. Just keep this in mind, if you're going with less, use slightly larger pendants. If you're using more, use slightly smaller pendants. Above all, scale matters!!

Last but not lest, what height should I hang my pendants? They should hang 36" to 48" from the top of the counter. Be considerate of sight lines. You don't want the pendant to obstruct anyone views, nor do you want them to hit their heads!!

The beauty of table lamps!

The beauty of table lamps, they can add so much interest to a room. When an over head lighting is too bright, table lamps can provide just the right amount of light. Many people don't factor in table lamps. They don't realize what a design impact table lamps can bring to the space. Imagine adding any one of these lamps to your space. What story would unfold?

This lamp would be great for a Child's room.

You can use this lamp for a Romantic bedroom or Contemporary living room.

Can you see this one in a Billiard's room? It would definitely be a conversation piece!!

This piece would work will in an Industrial design room

Whimsical comes to mind. A child's playroom, perhaps.

This table lamp would add a pop of color in any room.

Traditional. Great for an office or living room or even bedroom.

OK, use your imagination on THIS one. What room would you put this one in? I guarantee this will definitely start a conversation!!

As you can see by these pictures, table lamps can add interest to your space. Not only are they important for task lighting, I believe they have a huge impact in the design. Imagine using the Traditional lamp in an Industrial design room? You can see how the lamp would impact that space. The next time you start your new project, remember table lamps have an important part in the design process.

Contemporary Rustic Kitchen Cabinets

Contemporary rustic kitchen cabinets are coming in strong. I'm starting to see a lot of this. Mixing old with contemporary is a very hot trend these day, especially in the kitchen. This is one trend that I have fallen in love with. Mixing the look of traditional, contemporary, rustic, all in one kitchen.

I love the look and feel that you get from mixing many design elements together. I know I said this before, but I'll say it again, "What's old, is new again!"

How To Create A Beautiful Room!

Creating a beautiful well design room can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Did you know there are guidelines that can help you? Notice how well put together a designer's room always looks? Want to know how it's done? Here are some just some of the guidelines that can help you when decorating your room.

1. Balance. Have you achieved balance horizontally, vertically? Is the room "heavier" on one side verses the other? What about color? Does it hit all three zones, Skyline, Power zone, Function zone? Do your metal finishes co-ordinate? Bronze with bronze, satin nickel with satin nickel?

2. Harmony. Do your rooms tell a story? Do all the rooms flow together, is it it "choppy"? Although there's nothing wrong with mixing different styles together, what you don't want is one room that's shabby chic, one that is contemporary, one traditional and so on.

3. Proportion. The relation between one item to another in terms of size. Is the lamp too big for the table? Too small?

4. Scale.  Make sure your furniture is to scale. Is your sofa too large for the room?

5. Style. Have you achieved your desire look? Do all the elements work together? Does it have flair?

6. Color.  Again does it hit all three zones, Function, Power, Skyline? Or do you have in one area only, creating unbalance in the room?

7. Rhythm & Flow. Keep the room moving. This is where you're going to repeat things. Be true to the form. Round with round, square with square.

These guidelines are a great starting point. But if you find you're having trouble, it may be worth it to hire an Interior Decorator. The cost of a mistake is much more pricer then the cost of hiring an Interior Decorator!!
