The Do's and Don't of a Room Design!

Designing a room can be a daunting task. Many of my clients don't know where to start. There are so many elements that need to be addressed. So I put together a list of what I consider to be important. The do's and don't of a good design.

Lack of Cohesion: This room can't decide what it is. Contemporary? Traditional? Does the items serve a purpose? Pay attention to all the elements in the room. Nothing pulls this room together!!

(Client's photo provided by Abella Home Staging & Redesign)

Overdone symmetry: Becomes redundant and uninteresting. You don't need to have two of everything. The only exception may be in the master bedroom.

Color gone wrong: Understand saturation of color. Saturation is the purest form of the color, the highest level. Don't mix cool and warm colors. The cool color will make the warm color seem "dirty" or "murky".

Harmony: The way the rooms flows together. Does it tell a story or is it fragmented? What story does this room tell? Too much going on!!

Scale: The way things relate to the room. Example - is the lamp too large for the table? Is the table too small for the room?

Balance: Have you achieved balance? Color? Texture? Metal? Vertically? Horizontally? This room is a well balanced room, the color hits all three zones. Metals co-ordinate and there are different textures displayed in the room.

Proportion: The way things relate to one another. Example - are the accessories the best proportion for the fireplace? How about the centerpiece? All the elements & accessories are the right proportion in this room design.

Style: Does it have flair and have you honored what it is you are trying to achieve? Does it pull al the elements together?  Round lamp, round table. Centerpiece right proportion for table. Color in all three zones. Room has achieved all design elements.

Color: Does it hit the three zones? Function Zone 0" - 36". Power Zone 36" - 78". Skyline Zone 78" to ceiling. Color hits all three zones.

Rhythm & Flow: Keeps the room moving. This is where you're going to repeat things. Be true to the form. Example - round table has round centerpiece. Doesn't mean everything has to be round.

Making sure your space has all the important elements will help you achieve a well design room. Use these tips as a guideline. And if you need help pulling the room together, consider hiring Abella Home Staging & Redesign. Hiring a professional will actually save you money in the long room by avoiding costly mistakes!!

Global Chic, all the rage!!

Global chic is all the rage these days. What is global chic?  Global chic (sometimes called eclectic) is "to combine elements or particular styles from different time periods and different origins within a single project."  according to Mykola Steponyuk, which pretty much, sums it up. It's mixing different design styles to achieve a unique look.

Now please understand, that doesn't mean you just throw pieces of furniture and accessories together and expect it to work? It won't!! You still have to have some elements to tie it all together, like color, fabric or finishes! The over all look, if done correctly is beautiful and unique!!

Designing a Bedroom!

I was recently hired to design a girls bedroom. She stated she wanted either a canopy bed, or some sort a of bed that make a statement. And she loves the color purple!

So I went to work. The first thing I did was take some pictures and measured the room.

This room had a lot of angles!! I chose to go with a full size bed. She had the option of choosing either a 6'x9' or an 8'x10' area rug.  I gave her a bedroom bench for seating and storage, a chair and a desk!

Then it was off to do some shopping!! Once I was done, I made an appointment with the client and showed her my design. She was very pleased!! So much so, she is having a hard time making a decision between which bedroom set she wants to go with.

There is still a lot of work to do, like window treatment, bedding and accessorizing, but we are off to a good start!

If you need help with planning or designing your room, give Abella Home Staging & Redesign a call! We will work with any size budget!!

Eight Biggest Design Mistakes People Make!

As an Interior Decorator and Home Stager, I have seen my share of homes! Many times the mistakes people make are the same. Sometimes, they are easy to fix. Other times, not as much!! By knowing what to do, and what not to do, you can avoid these mistakes.

1. Furniture. Having too much or not enough. Most of the time it's too many pieces. To avoid the
mistake of having the furniture not fit, measure the room first. You would be amazed at how many
people DO NOT do this simple task!!

2. Color Scheme. Often it's a lack of color. Or they add color, but it's in one area only. For example;
yellow pillows on the sofa and but no where else. Notice how you eyes linger on those yellow
    pillows?

3. Wall Art. Most of the time, people hang wall art too high.  Good rule of thumb, 60" from floor to center of the picture. With an exception of wall art hanging over the sofa, then it's 8" off the sofa.

4. Clutter. Nothing ruins a good design faster then clutter. Less is more!!

5. Lighting. Here's a formula you can follow, when deciding if you have enough light in a room.
Multiply length x width of the room, then multiply 1.5 = wattage.  For Kitchen, multiply 2.5
instead of 1.5 for wattage. Don't forget about ambient lighting.

6. Focal Point. Each room should have a focal point. In the bedroom, it's the bed. In today's home,
the TV seems to be the focal point. Group your furniture around the focal point, and if necessary,
use an area rug to ground the space.

7. Matchy-Matchy. A look that is outdated and boring!! Add piazza and character to your room by
designing a room that co-ordinates rather then match.

8. Accessories. Don't line your accessories in a row. Instead, group them in odd numbers, 3 being the perfect number. You can add in different height, texture and color (all blue but different shades of blue). Don't forget about scale.

These tips should guide you in achieving the room you desire. If you would like your room to be filled with happiness every time you walk in, contact us!

The Art of Accessorizing

The appeal of a beautiful room has many aspects, physically, visually, and emotionally. Every room needs careful attention, from floor to ceiling. Each step builds upon the next. Careful consideration must be taken when accessorizing and creating a room. Keep in mind the style and "feel" you are trying to create. What story are you trying to convey?

Here are just some things to consider:

1.  Create interest by using unexpected art for accessorizing.

2. Shop at many different stores. This will help create a room that does not appear to be from a "Rooms to Go" catalog.

3. When decorating, odd numbers work best.

4. Placing a mirror over a mantel will only reflect the floor, so don't do it!

5. Use old windows, textiles, etc to create unique displays.

6. Create your own art or accessories.

7. Hire a professional. They're not as expensive as you think and you will have a one-of-a kind room.

Whatever you do, have fun doing it. The key is to use art and accessories that feel personal and reflect your taste!
